How long a single item has been sitting since it was received, which aging bucket it falls into, and how much cash is tied up in the units currently on hand. Age alone isn't a verdict — it's one input into a bigger decision, which is why the result is framed as an interpretation, not a label.
How the calculation works
Inventory Value = Units on Hand × Unit Cost
Inventory Age = Today − Date Received
The age in days is placed into a bucket (0–30, 31–60, 61–90, 91–180, 181–365, or 365+ days) with a plain-language interpretation — New, Maturing, Aging, Significantly aged, or Review recommended.
Example
50 units received 45 days ago, at $18 unit cost:
- Inventory Value = 50 × $18 = $900
- Inventory Age = 45 days → 31–60 day bucket → “Maturing”
How to interpret the result
A high age bucket by itself doesn't mean a product is a problem — a slow-moving seasonal item and a genuinely stuck SKU can show the same age. Pair this with whether the item is still selling (see the Dead Stock Calculator) before deciding on markdown, bundling, or liquidation.
When this metric can be misleading
Category and seasonality matter. A holiday item that's 200 days old right after the season ended isn't necessarily a problem — it may simply be waiting for next year. Fast-turning categories (fresh, trend-driven, or perishable goods) should treat much shorter ages as significant.
What to do next
For one item, a long age bucket is a prompt to check recent sales velocity and margin before deciding. Across a full catalog, the same question — which SKUs are aging and not selling and tying up meaningful cash — is what actually determines priority.
